Education Northwest released an introductory module that will assist teachers, administrators, and leaders of kindergarten through high school in building an understanding of the Common Core State Standards for mathematics. The materials include facilitator notes, slideshows, and handouts. The activities in each session are designed to support teams in working together to explore various aspects of the standards.
Education Northwest released a brief that reviews actions district administrators should consider taking now to prepare their schools for Common Core State Standards (CCSS) implementation. Included in the four-page brief are suggestions for drafting an implementation plan; planning long-range, articulated professional development; developing a transition plan and curriculum framework; and more.
What do parents need to know about the Common Core State Standards (CCSS)? How will they affect teaching and assessing mathematics and English language arts? What are the benefits, and what can parents do to prepare for the CCSS? These and other questions are answered in the March 2011 "Spotlight on the Common Core State Standards"—a series published by Education Northwest to keep regional stakeholders informed about this important initiative.
Support teams work as external facilitators of improvement in schools and districts designated as in need of improvement under the No Child Left Behind Act. REL Northwest has released a study finding that team members in four Northwest region states share many characteristics and qualifications and work primarily in schools, meeting with administrators on school improvement planning and implementation. Team members differ in time spent on the activities that support these functions.
Education Northwest recently released a brief describing some of the factors that distinguish rural schools from each other, as well as from those in urban communities. The brief provides recommendations for technical assistance providers and others from outside the community who are engaged in helping rural schools. Lessons Learned is a series of briefs based on Education Northwest's research, development, and technical assistance activities conducted over more than four decades on the frontlines of transforming teaching and learning.
The process of selecting a school turnaround provider can seem overwhelming, with so many choices and so little time and information. External and internal pressure to make the selection as quickly as possible can lead to hurried decisions with long-term, costly consequences for both districts and students. This "Lessons Learned" brief presents concrete, clearly defined steps that can lead you to the best provider for your local context.
