Evergreen Education Group released a report tracking the latest in online and blended learning policy and practice developments across the country. The report shows that opportunities exist for at least some students in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, but no state provides a full set of online learning opportunities to all students. There continues to be rapid growth across the country, but various policy barriers have resulted in uneven growth.
The Thomas B. Fordham Institute released a paper proposing that digital education needs excellent teachers and that the teaching profession needs digital education. The authors propose a smaller—but more talented and better paid—teaching force with its impact magnified through the expanded reach and efficiency allowed by digital technology. "Time-technology swaps" allow the unbundling of teacher roles and the more efficient use of their time supported by new, lower-paid positions with appealing, shorter hours.
Change the Equation has a released a new report on the condition of STEM learning in all 50 states and the District of Columbia to help measure state performance—and dig deeper into the nation’s education challenges.
A recent report from the National Science Board contains a series of policy actions, a research agenda, and three key recommendations detailing how our nation might foster the identification and development of future STEM innovators. The report draws on the findings from an expert panel discussion held at the National Science Foundation (NSF) on August 23–25, 2009, and a two-year examination of the issue by the Board with the support of expert staff from the NSF Directorate for Education and Human Resources and the U.S. Department of Education.
