  1. Horizon Research, Inc. (HRI) is initiating a three-year study examining the impact of middle school mathematics curriculum on student achievement. HRI is looking for schools that would:

    • Share state mathematics assessments results for students in grades 6, 7, and 8 each year of the study
    • Share demographic data for students
    • Administer a one-class period version of the Balanced Assessment in Mathematics to sixth-graders in year one, seventh-graders in year two, and eighth-graders in year three
    • Administer a questionnaire to sixth-grade teachers in year one, seventh-grade teachers in year two, and eighth-grade teachers in year three

    In return, schools would be provided school-specific results as well as yearly financial incentives to participating districts, schools, and teachers.

  2. The Comprehensive School Reform Quality (CSRQ) Center has recently released a report entitled the CSRQ Center Report on Education Service Providers. The report offers a scientifically based review of the effectiveness and quality of seven widely implemented education service provider (ESP) models.

  3. The Comprehensive School Reform Quality (CSRQ) Center has recently released a new guide that provides educators with strategies to enhance the engagement and progress of students with disabilities through school reform models.

  4. The U.S. Department of Education has posted the monitoring reports from the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs for the Highly Qualified Teachers and Improving Teacher Quality State Grants (ESEA Title II, Part A).

  5. The Center on Education Policy (CEP) has recently released a publication that looked at California's state restructuring efforts. The Center interviewed state, regional, and school staff, in addition to conducting district-level case studies, observations of restructuring workshops, and document reviews, to learn more about restructuring in California.

  6. The Education Trust has recently released a report that examines state assessment results in reading and math between 2003 and 2005. The Education Trust found that progress in raising achievement and closing gaps continues to be strongest in the elementary grades.

  7. The U.S. Department of Education has recently invited applications for new awards for using FY 2005 funds. The competition will fund implementation grants to create or expand Smaller Learning Communities (SLC) structures and strategies in large public high schools. The application deadline is June 26, 2006.

  8. The Teacher-to-Teacher Initiative is offering 14 free workshops for teachers this summer (2006). (Note: More workshops available in summer of 2008.) Teachers and administrators from across the country will share strategies that have proven effective in their own classrooms and schools.
