  1. Note: Institutes now referred to as "Fostering Number Sense and Algebraic Reasoning in K–2, 3–5, and 6–8"
    Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory (NWREL) is offering two different summer institutes:

    K-Grade 2 (July 24-July 28): In this institute, teachers will engage in a variety of activities to deepen their understanding of how to teach number sense and algebraic reasoning in the primary grades. Participants will receive a copy of "Children's Mathematics, Cognitively Guided Instruction" (Carpenter, Fennema, Franke, Levi, & Empson, 1999) and an institute binder.

    Grades 3-5 (July 31-August 4): This institute will provide teachers with opportunities to engage in activities to deepen their understanding of the integration of arithmetic and algebra in the elementary classroom. Participants will receive a copy of "Thinking Mathematically, Integrating Arithmetic & Algebra in Elementary School" (Carpenter, Franke, & Levi, 2003) and an institute binder.

  2. The U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) recently released its annual report: "The Condition of Education, 2006." The report presents indicators of important developments and trends in U.S. education.

  3. The U.S. Department of Education's Office of Innovation and Improvement has issued a notice inviting applications for the Charter School Program (CSP) for FY 2006. The purpose of the CSP is to increase national understanding of the charter school model and to expand the number of high-quality charter schools available to students across the nation by providing financial assistance for the planning, program design, and initial implementation of charter schools, and to evaluate the effects of charter schools, including their effects on students, student academic achievement, staff, and parents.

    The deadline for transmittal of applications is June 30, 2006.

  4. WestEd's SchoolsMovingUp website, in collaboration with the California Comprehensive Center, will be hosting a webinar: "Districts on the Right Track: Napa Valley Unified School District," on Wednesday, June 21 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time.

    In this webinar, district leaders interested in supporting schools in program improvement will learn from Elena Toscano, Napa Valley Unified School District's assistant superintendent of instruction, about her district's innovative support model.

  5. The American Institutes for Research (AIR) has recently released the report, "Lessons and Recommendations from the Alabama Reading Initiative: Sustaining Focus on Secondary Reading." Funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York, the study identifies factors that contribute to the program's successful implementation at the middle and high school levels.

  6. The Importance of Reading Literacy for Youth Who Are Neglected or Delinquent

    The National Evaluation and Technical Assistance Center for the Education of Children and Youth Who Are Neglected, Delinquent, or At Risk (NDTAC) is offering a webinar June 22, 2006, (2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. EST) on the importance of reading literacy in juvenile correctional education.

  7. The ECS National Forum on Education Policy will be held July 11-14 in Minneapolis, Minn. Topics include math and science education; the First Amendment and intelligent design; high school reform; national curriculum; educational technology; disaster preparedness; adult education; college financial aid; and turning around low-performing schools.

  8. The Comprehensive School Reform Quality Center (CSRQ) has recently released a checklist for educators to use when considering strategies to improve the participation of students with disabilities in comprehensive school reform (CSR) and improvement models.
