  1. The Center for Strengthening the Teaching Profession (CSTP) recently released the results of surveys of Washington State teachers, that describe teacher views on the value of their professional development. Teachers were asked whether their professional development is:

    1. Aligned with the essential academic learning requirements and the grade level expectations?
    2. Supports school and district improvement?
    3. Is focused on the needs of student?
    4. Is tailored to the needs of teachers?
  2. The U.S. Department of Education (ED) has recently released its recommendations for the upcoming reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). Their recommendations are grouped into five areas: every child performing at or above grade level by 2014; flexibility for innovation and improvement; challenging students and preparing them to succeed; helping teachers close the achievement gap; and strengthening public schools and empowering parents.

  3. The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) has released its recommendations to strengthen and update the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). Their recommendations include: promoting innovative models and reinventing the peer review process; improving accountability determinations; differentiating consequences; improving assessment systems; properly including students with disabilities and English language learners in state assessment and accountability systems; enhancing teacher quality; and strengthening resources to appropriately reflect the increased roles and responsibilities placed on states.

  4. The Thomas B. Fordham foundation recently released the results of a survey of "Washington insiders" regarding the upcoming reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). Survey findings include: respondents do not believe that reauthorization will occur until at least 2009 and the law will only undergo minor changes.

  5. The National Center for Education Research is holding a training institute that focuses on increasing the national capacity to develop and conduct rigorous evaluations of the effectiveness of education interventions by training researchers to conduct cluster (group) randomized trials in education settings. The Institute will be held at Vanderbilt University, June 17th - June 29th 2007. Applications are due no later than Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at 8:00 p.m. EST.

  6. The Center on Education Policy (CEP), has recently released a report that summarizes the changes to state NCLB accountability plans approved by the U.S. Department of Education during 2006. The report also discusses the changes in and expansion of state testing programs as a result of NCLB.

  7. The Center on Innovation & Improvement has recently the Handbook on Restructuring and Substantial School Improvement. The Handbook's purpose is to assist states, districts, and schools in establishing policies, procedures, and support to successfully restructure schools.

    The Handbook is organized into three sections:

    • Section 1: Overview of Restructuring
    • Section 2: Topical Modules
    • Section 3: Indicators of Successful Restructuring
  8. The National High School Center has recently released a brief outlining the provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) relating to restructuring and includes strategies that states and districts are undertaking, particularly at the high school level.
