  1. The Center on Education Policy has recently released a report describing California's efforts to assist schools in restructuring during the 2008–2009 school year. The report highlights the state's expanded approach to technical assistance, which includes public as well as private providers.

  2. The Center on Education Policy recently published a report looking at how local educators perceive and act on state policies designed to help at-risk students and English language learners achieve the levels of proficiency needed to pass state high school exit examinations and graduate. The Center's findings are based on data from school observations and interviews with more than 50 school administrators, teachers, and other school staff in Arizona.

  3. The Center on Education Policy's report describing the state of Maryland's efforts to assist schools in restructuring during school year 2008–2009 is now available. The report highlights the state's participation in the NCLB differentiated accountability pilot program.

  4. The National Comprehensive Center for Teacher Quality has prepared a brief comparing two methods of evaluating teachers, value-added measures, and classroom observations. The brief discusses the advantages and disadvantages associated with each of the methods. It is intended to help regional comprehensive centers and state policymakers as they consider evaluation methods when clarifying policy, or when guiding and supporting districts in selecting and using appropriate evaluation methods for various purposes.

  5. The National Center on Response to Intervention's Technical Review Committee (TRC) has recently completed a review of screening reading tools. The resulting chart provides users with information about the technical adequacy of commonly used screening tools in reading. In addition, the resource provides users with practical information about how to obtain, access support for, and implement the tools.

  6. The U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences (IES) recently published a report prepared by the Regional Educational Laboratory Northeast & Islands describing and analyzing how eight state education agencies in the Northeast and Islands Region identify and support low-performing schools and districts under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Focusing on direct state supports and interventions, the report finds that the eight agencies have created supports and rationales to put federally defined accountability principles into practice in response to their specific contexts, local needs, and capacities.

  7. The U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences (IES) recently released a report prepared by the Regional Educational Laboratory Northeast & Islands describing efforts by five states to improve adolescent literacy. Highlighting common challenges and lessons, the report examines how each state has engaged key stakeholders, set rigorous goals and standards, aligned resources to support adolescent literacy goals, built educator capacity, and used data to measure progress.
