  2. The National Comprehensive Center for Teacher Quality recently published a key issue brief on teacher recruitment strategies that will help hard-to-staff urban and rural districts and schools recruit the highest quality, best-prepared teachers.

  3. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) released a report providing detailed information on the size of the achievement gaps between black and white students at both the national and state levels and how those achievement gaps have changed over time. Most of the data in this report are derived from the results of the 2007 main NAEP assessments, and are supplemented with data from the long-term trend assessments.

  4. REL Northwest recently published a report focusing on student proficiency in reading and math from 2003–2004 to 2006–2007. The report compares gaps in performance on state achievement tests between grade 8 American Indian and Alaska Native students and all other grade 8 students in 26 states serving large populations of American Indian and Alaska Native students.

  5. The Center on Instruction has developed a professional development module intended for state and district leaders that is now available. The module provides background knowledge on language development, language assessment of English language learners, academic language instruction, and vocabulary K–12. It is designed to be used as a four-hour train-the-trainer session. Other options include using the materials in the Facilitator’s Guide as a study group tool with other ELL professionals or using the information and completing the activities as a self-study guide.

  6. The National High School Center has released a fact sheet that provides a snapshot of the current issues surrounding dropout factors among students who are identified with emotional disturbance. It also offers mental health resources to help this population remain in high school.

  7. The U.S. Department of Education published the Notice of Proposed Priorities for the Race to the Top Fund in late July. The fund provides competitive grants to encourage and reward states that are creating the conditions for education innovation and reform; implementing ambitious plans in the four education reform areas described in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA); and achieving significant improvement in student outcomes, including making substantial gains in student achievement, closing achievement gaps, improving high school graduation rates, and ensuring that students are prepared for success in college and careers.
