Tuesday, May 26, 2009 - 12:00pm - 1:00pm
Webinar
Event sponsored by NWRCC

This regional webinar focused on recommendations for the use of ARRA funds to address the needs of ELL students from the ELL Working Group on ELL Policy (http://www.stanford.edu/~hakuta/ARRA/)

Part 1 of this event was participation in the WestEd-sponsored webinar, "Recommendations for Addressing the Needs of English Language Learners: The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA)"

In this webinar Robert Linquanti, Director for English Learner Evaluation and Accountability Support in WestEd's Comprehensive School Assistance Program and Diane August, Senior Research Scientist, Center for Applied Linguistics, moderated a panel of three researchers from the English Language Learner (ELL) Working Group:

  • Kenji Hakuta, Professor in the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University;
  • Jennifer O'Day, Principal Research Scientist at the American Institutes for Research;
  • Charlene Rivera, Director of the Center for Equity and Excellence in Education at George Washington University.

Panel members discussed the ELL Working Group's recommendations for using ARRA funds wisely to meet the needs of our nation's English learners.

Part 2 of this event was sponsored by NWRCC and included a one-hour follow-on discussion among the SEA participants from our five states and the NWRCC ELL team. During this discussion participants reflected on the panel member presentation, asked questions, and considered how the recommendations applied in their states.
