Event sponsored by NWRCC

Education Northwest, in collaboration with NWRCC, hosted the third in a series of webinars on the Common Core State Standards.

Webinar Description

In this webinar, participants had an opportunity to hear from Dr. Cynthia Shanahan, Executive Director for the Council on Teacher Education (CTE), Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Education, and Professor of Literacy, Language and Culture at the University of Illinois.

The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects were released in June 2010. The development of the standards was coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and content experts. These standards specify the literacy skills and understandings students must possess in multiple disciplines in order to graduate high school prepared to succeed in college and in the modern workforce.

Questions addressed in this webinar included:

  • Why are there common core standards for literacy in history/social studies, science, and technical subjects?
  • What do teachers need to know about these standards?
  • Which teachers should be using them?
  • What are some ways teachers and schools can ensure that students will meet them?

Participants had an opportunity to pose questions for Dr. Shanahan during registration and live webinar. This webinar was designed for state education agency and local education agency staff from AK, ID, MT, OR, WA, WY.
