Final Public Meeting with Design Team - November 12, 2009
2:00-5:00pm Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront – Room Salon D

Last opportunity for public to provide input to Oregon's Race to the Top (RTTT) application!

If you are unable to attend this meeting but would like to provide feedback on the DRAFT recommendations of the workgroups, please format your feedback in a WORD document or .pdf and send as an attachment to ORRTTT@gmail.com by COB on November 13.

As with many states, Oregon is applying for a RTTT grant from the U.S. Department of Education. $4.35 billion has been set aside from the Stimulus funds for the national competitive RTTT process.

The Oregon Department of Education is bringing together education stakeholders from schools, non-profits and private industries from across the state to identify best practices and chart a clear path for next steps in education reform. The application will be developed by a design team with four work groups that will focus on particular criteria that must be addressed in the application as outlined by the federal government. The design team will prepare the state’s application with the input and feedback of the work groups. Each of Oregon’s work groups will focus on one of four assurances that a state must make to succeed in the Race to the Top competition:

1. The use of benchmarked standards and assessments to prepare students for success;
2. Recruiting and retaining effective teachers and principals;
3. The use of assessment data to improve instruction and practices; and
4. Turning around the state’s lowest performing schools.

The work groups have already begun their work and will continue to meet regularly until a final application is approved by the design team. In addition, the state has secured advisors and stakeholders who will provide feedback on the draft application.

If you would like to provide feedback on the DRAFT recommendations of the workgroups, please format your feedback in a WORD document or .pdf and send as an attachment to ORRTTT@gmail.com by COB on November 13. These will be reviewed by the RTTT Design Team and Working Groups. Given the amount of feedback expected and the short time frame for review, please limit comments to 2-3 pages. Responses longer than that may not be reviewed.
